A pebble for Aiden

 Back in the spring, an old friend of mine had a baby boy and I immediately knew that I wanted to knit something special for this special baby.  After seeing Amanda's multiple versions of the pebble vest, I knew I had found the right pattern.  The problem was that by the time I got around to knitting this up, little Aiden was already five months old (and I'd been told that he was a bit of a big five months old too)!  I followed Amanda's suggestions for simply using heavier weight yarn but following the pattern exactly as written to make a vest that would be 6-12 months in size.  

Of course, once I had completed the vest, it just seemed like it was too small.  Since I didn't have the advantage of trying it on little Aiden (they live in New York) and since it was July and I definitely wanted it to fit him through the winter, I ripped it out and started modifying...(this was also after I tried it on the littlest of Jared's nephews who was about five months old at the time).  I referenced this larger version of the vest (on ravelry) but didn't follow those instructions exactly either.  

Luckily, this project also stuck by my every-other-project-from-the-stash rule, since I was using leftover yarn from Eli's Baby Blanket.  I sent the vest off in August and got word that it fits perfectly.  I was hoping to have some photos of the vest in action to share with you all, but alas, I think his mama is busy in single-mama land.  Just can't wait to snuggle this little guy in person the next time I'm in New York.

Pattern: Pebble, by Nikol Lohr
Yarn: Berroco Vintage
Needles: Size 7
Modifications: I cast on 95sts and knit the bottom garter section for 16 rows and continued as follows:
Row 17: Sl1, K7, PM, P37, PM, K8, PM, P37, PM, K5
Row 18: as stated in pattern
Row 19: Sl1, K7, P37, K8, P37, K5
Continue until 69 rows have been completed.
Row 70: BO all sts before the first marker, K to 2nd marker, BO st between 2nd and 3rd markers, K to last marker, BO last 8 sts.  You'll have 37 sts each for front and back.


FRONT:
Rows 1-5: as stated in pattern:
Rows 5-19: Repeat row 1 (ending with a WS row).


Front neckline:
Sl1, K10, BO neck st until 10 st remain on your left needle, K to end.  You should have 11 st on either side of neck.
Open shoulder:
Rows 1 and 2: as stated in pattern
Repeat Row 1 fifteen more times.  {40 rows}
Seamed Shoulder:
Rows 1 and 2: as stated in pattern
Repeat Row 1 thirteen more times. {35 rows}


BACK:
Rows 1 and 2: as stated in pattern
Rows 3-27: Repeat Row 1 (ending with a WS row)


Back neckline:
Sl1, K10, BO neck st until 10 st remain on your left needle (plus one live st beyond the BO on your right needle), K to end.  You should have 11 st on either side of neck.
Seamed shoulder:
Rows 1 and 2: as stated in pattern
Work Row 1 five more times.  
Open shoulder:
Rows 1 and 2: as stated in pattern
Work Row 1 ten more times.  BO.
