sigh
to all those people [and there were a lot of people] who said "why would you move to minnesota from california?" this is my response.
there is no more beautiful sight in the world than leaves glowing in the evening light of autumn. the fact that it is 82 degrees doesn't hurt. though i'll admit that i wouldn't mind if it was a little colder.

20 september
Hi friends. How are you all doing? I've been noticing a lot of folks feeling all out of sorts with this season's transition. I have all sorts of thoughts and ideas and project to-dos swirling around in my head, and every time I think of them, I get overwhelmed by the fact that I don't have time to do most of them. And of course, work couldn't be busier or more stressful right now. But instead of sitting here complaining to you all, I'm going to share just a few things that are bringing me little bits of happiness...
:: days that start out grey and crisp and end with a warm sunshine.
:: long evening shadows.
:: afternoon treats of leftover coffee, oatmilk, and maple syrup, blended with some ice. serious yum.
:: saturday afternoon naps.
:: all the red clover that i'm picking around town these days. perfect for my favorite tea of red clover, lemon balm, nettle, and peppermint.
:: drying herbs from the garden.
:: this photo.
:: pumpkin ice cream.
what's making you happy these days? i'd love to hear.

hello sweet february

If you've been around this blog for a few years, you may recall that February is, in fact, not my favorite month. Often it's because I'm beginning to grow tired of the cold winter weather and am just longing for spring (which is of course still months away!). I usually try to be very intentional about combating these February blues by paying extra attention to little things that make me happy.Well, on this first day of February, at just before 8:30am, there is already no shortage of things making me happy to start the month off. At the top of this happy list is yet another calendar from Shanna and me! Since we began this little project with our autumn calendar back in September, we have really enjoyed working on these and sharing them with you all (and we hope you've enjoyed them too!).
This month, as usual, we've paired some of my polaroid photos with Shanna's beautiful illustration and hand lettering. We're also offering two of the photos/illustrations individually if you're not in the mood for a calendar, but would like to brighten up your desktop anyways. Just download the photos and set them as your desktop (please, these are for personal use only!). Also, if you've missed out on any of our past collaborations, you can check them out on Shanna's archive page.
Finally, I've got one other itty bitty little gift for you all (see how good I am with the happymaking today?!). I've been doing a lot of walking this winter. On those bitter cold, the walks are pretty quiet, with hardly anyone else around. I've been filling my head with some lovely tunes on these walks, and I made this little mixtape of some of those tunes. Hope you like them!
Enjoy, friends! And happy February.

happiness is::

::leaving a very frustrating day at work (actually, three consecutive frustrating days at work) to find that it's a beautiful warm day outside.::upon arriving home, taking a very excited puppy for a nice walk in the park.
::deciding (as I don't often do) to grab a camera for this walk.
::blowing half a pack of polaroid film on the beautiful autumn light.
::sitting on the couch and knitting for a few hours while I should be doing the huge pile of dishes in the kitchen.
::finishing washing all those dishes and feeling calmed by the clean kitchen.
::ending the night with a fresh batch of apple cinnamon granola.
::waking up to remember that I have a morning meeting at my favorite bagel shop, yum!
Thanks for all the wonderful comments on my last few posts! You all make me happy here! Just a reminder, the g l e a n i n g collection goes on sale TODAY at 1pm CST. And although they are sold out of the bread bags I wrote about in my last post, the good ladies over at The Cup and Saucer Collective are working on a new collection, so be sure to keep your eye out!

bread in a bag
I'm sure you all know by now that I'm a big fan of homemade bread. I've written about my love for fresh baked bread here many times (of course, at the moment, I'm entirely too lazy to find those links. maybe I should add the new search feature...). Although I do bake bread through the summer, when it's hot here, fall is such a wonderful bread baking time. Especially since freshly baked bread is the perfect accompaniment for a nice hearty soup. Something that also makes a long-awaited appearance in fall.One issue I'd always had was how to store my bread to keep it fresh. Paper bags allow it to get hard too quickly. Plastic bags create too much moisture. I have tried leaving it out on the counter with the cut side down, which seems to work, but of course then the crumbs get everywhere. I've sort of been on the lookout for a bread box, thinking that would be my silver bullet, but I've yet to find the perfect one.
So, when the genius ladies behind the new Cup & Saucer Collective included a bread bag in their first collection, I knew that I had to have one.
::Fact: this bag has not been empty since it arrived at my house approximately one month ago.
::Fact: bread in this bag stays fresh for a reasonable amount of time (around 5-6 days for a loaf of whole wheat bread). Check it out, it's pretty much perfect (not to mention that it's beautiful).
For those of you wondering, the bread inside of this bag is Basic Whole Wheat Bread from the Laurel's Bread Book. And, in this photo, there are two full loaves in the bag- that's how big it is.

{finally} fall
If you've hung around this blog for any length of time, you're probably well aware that today is a very important day for me. It's the first day of my very favorite season. Not that I haven't enjoyed my summer, immensely. But really, I do have a serious love affair with fall (and not just because it's my birthday season). I kicked off the season by wearing some brand new knee socks and my favorite boots, and a corduroy shirt. It was so perfectly fall and I feel full inside.I'm not quite ready to share my fall manifesto, though I think it will largely consist of packing, moving, and subsequently unpacking into our new house. In fact, now that I've written that, it seems so fitting to me that this big adventure of moving into our own home be starting during fall. I know some might disagree, but I feel like fall is so full of possibility. And of course it's the time of year when we begin to turn inward, and homeward.
I'm also excited to announce that official mayor of fall, Shanna, and I (the official vice-mayor of fall) will be bringing you all a little treat next week. Just a little something to celebrate our love for the best season ever. Happy fall, friends.

sf trip: part 2

I moved to California after I graduated college. I had already lived there for a summer, and had a place to live with some friends. I didn't want to stay in Vermont (where I had gone to college) and I didn't want to move back to New York. Also, even though my entire family is from New York/New Jersey, about half of them lived in California--including my brother, my aunt and uncle and two cousins, and my two other aunts. My mom's sister and her husband live just south of San Francisco and their home definitely became my home away from home while I was living there. At the time, one of my cousins was living with them, while her older sister was not too far away, and the same for my brother. While my dad's sisters lived farther south, in Santa Cruz and San Diego.Just about every Sunday night, I'd take BART down to the southern-most station where someone would pick me up and bring me over to their house (this was until the last few months I was there, when I finally got a car). We'd hang out, have snacks, eat a delicious dinner and dessert, watch the last few minutes of 60 Minutes, when we all got a laugh out of Andy Rooney complaining about something, then the Simpsons, and then go home. It was perfect. When I was growing up, we didn't get to travel that much back and forth to visit so it was such a treat to get to spend so much time with my aunt and uncle, and with my cousins (one of whom is just a few weeks younger than me and the other one is a few months older than my brother), who are our only first cousins. Sunday dinners is one of the things I miss most about living in California. And not having family in Minnesota is the biggest downer about living here, for sure.
During my trip, I got to have a wonderful Sunday dinner, and then stay over at my aunt and uncle's house. Have I mentioned how much I love their house? I don't even really know how to describe it, but I hope these photos give a little bit of peek into the coziness. I think I love all the little corners and "things" around the house. And all the little "things" aren't just "things"--they have a story, or a history. I love that this house is more than a house, it's a home. It's lived in. I'm glad I documented all these little corners, looking at these photos now is making me really happy.

a big smile

hello friends. i hope you all had lovely weekends, i know i did. it started out with a last minute dinner with friends on friday night. saturday held a beautiful walk with jared and freddie, some sewing (finally), and more hanging out with friends. sunday, more sewing and then the spring meeting for my community garden. the garden meeting, together with the absolutely beautiful and warm weather got me really excited about spring and summer. i even defrosted another bag of strawberries from last summer, thinking that we should really use up those berries since we'll be getting fresh ones soon! okay, i know i'm getting a bit ahead of myself- we've still got at least three months until strawberries.
and now, it's sixty-five degrees at 7pm and i just took freddie for a very long walk and then came home to a sweet letter and sat on the porch with bare feet, short sleeves, a glass of ginger ale, and my puppy. it was lovely. i just cannot get enough of being outside right now. it feels so liberating to be outdoors without being bundled up under multiple layers of clothing! i just can't stop smiling about this sunny warmth. yeah, i can tell it's going to be a good spring indeed. i've started thinking about my spring manifesto, but i think i'll wait to share it until friday, when it's official.
A few of you asked about the recipe for the ginger ale- I used this one. Depending on how you mix it, the syrup really does make quite a lot of ginger ale. It was very easy, and I can see this being a staple from now on! {as a bonus, it's also delicious mixed with a little whiskey...}

::more of my neighborhood, as I'm walking and busing a little more these days
::two more rolls of film
Touch
::The warm cuddly-ness of my puppy
::More wool socks and warm hats
::The warm sun on my face during my walk with Freddie this afternoon, as it's finally above freezing again
Smell
::Another box of tangerines sent by my mom
::my morning coffee (always)
Hear
::Romantica
::my new mix cd from Claire
I also wanted to point you over to Maria's post on 3191 Miles Apart this week. I'm not sure if any of you have been following along in her and Stephanie's new blog, but it's absolutely lovely. Maria's post this week really spoke to me and reminded me a lot of my relationship with my own grandma, who I've been thinking about a lot recently, as the fourth anniversary of her passing was just a few days ago. Much love to you all this weekend, hug someone you love.

i've been knitting
It's true! Last year, I wanted to knit a sweater. Does it count if I started one on December 31? Who cares, I did. And I'm almost done! I cast on the ever-popular February Lady Sweater using O-Wool. It's the first time I've knitted anything from the top down, and I have to say that I'm really liking it. It seems like most people love this method because you can try the piece on as you're making it, which is definitely why I like it (I hate when sweaters are too short!). I'm really excited about this sweater because the pattern is simple to knit, but interesting to look at (my favorite) and I can already tell it's going to become a go-to sweater, especially as spring (slowly) approaches.
I'm really loving the yarn I chose, except for all those little bits of leaves and hay and whatever else that are spun into the yarn. I actually got a splinter at one point. I can safely say that's a first! Also, I finished another set of those lovely cabled fingerless gloves. This pair was sent off to my friend in Scotland, where I'm sure she needs something to keep her cozy.Finally, you might remember from last year that February is not my favorite month. Amanda (and many others out there) shares my pain, and I'm hoping to follow her lead by posting things that are making me happy this month. Here's a couple for you this week...
:: I took today off from work, just because.
:: Even though it was quite cold today, the sun was out all day and we took an hour and a half long walk with Freddie.
:: I dropped off three rolls of film today.
:: Snuggling on the bed with my puppy.
What's making you happy this week?01 December 2008

...and so many more. I hope you all have beautiful and delicious Thanksgivings.

new friends

are lots of fun. Especially when they're equally as nerdy about cameras and cupcakes and shelves upon shelves of doorknobs and light fixtures. Saturday afternoon I had the incredible pleasure of meeting up with four very lovely ladies.
We had some cupcakes (after we spent quite a while photographing the cupcakes) and warm beverages, which were much needed on the cold afternoon that it was, and chatted for a while.
Then we headed next door to the architectural salvage store and spent quite a while taking photos of all sorts of things that I always think would be good buys (but seriously, what would I do with a wall full of doorknobs? coat hooks?).
It was super fun, and I was once again reminded of how awesome it is to have found all these people that I have so much in common with through the beauty of flickr, and the internet in general. And how wonderful it is when some of those people just happen to be my neighbors.
I took most of my shots in film, so I'll be sharing some more of these when they come back later this week. I've finally decided to switch my film developing from the obnoxious, but faster place, to the slower, but nicer and WAY more knowledgeable (not to mention locally-owned) place. So some of my film may be coming back a little slower. Not to worry, I still haven't shown you most of my desert photos! Or my first roll of cross processed film! Yes, people, I have lots to share. And I think my blogging mojo is coming back. For real this time.25 September 2008
now who doesn't love presents?
Let's talk about my love for the US Postal Service. Okay, sure they can be annoying and expensive and unhelpful. But don't you just want to jump up and down and hug your mail carrier when they come to your door bearing presents? I do. Nevermind the fact that I'm almost never actually home when they come. But finding a box or envelope awaiting me on my front porch when I come home from work is just about the most exciting thing. At least in my book.
I'm a bit behind on this post, but I wanted to share with you a couple of the fun things that have arrived in my mailbox lately. Some of these have been from new friends that I've made out here in blog/flickrland, while others are from an old friend, and my mom. My mom, by the way, is the queen of sending good packages (including those purple corduroy shoes from the last post...).
Claire, a wonderful flickr friend, sent me this amazing wallet that she made, along with an adorable card and some vintage ribbon. That card on the right is a little description of all the fabrics that she used in the wallet and where and when she bought them all. How's that for some history?! I absolutely love it and it's so fun to think of her every time I take out my wallet. She'll be opening an etsy shop soon, so keep your eye out.
Nicole is another friend from out here. I'm sure most of you are familiar with her beautiful blog (and if you're not, go check it out. Her photographs and words always make me want to exhale). I sent Nicole some jam earlier in the summer, and she returned the gift with these amazing spices. I haven't tried them out yet, but they are three of my favorites. I'm thinking with all my meal planning, I'll be putting them to good use soon enough.
After the birthday jam my old friend Leah sent me last year, she and I decided to do a jam swap this summer. Leah and I met during our time living in Ecuador almost six years ago (wow) and lived together for a while in Berkeley, where she still lives. She and her boyfriend spent most of the summer with family in Maine, so she sent me some blueberry honey, and strawberry jams, both made from fruit that they picked themselves. The blueberry jam arrived in that lunchbox too! I'll be packing up her jams next week.
Finally, from my mom. This awesome little case was something they saw at a yard sale a while back and my mom immediately thought that it would be perfect for displaying cards at craft fairs. She was so right. She actually called me to see if I would want it, and at the time, I was at a yard sale here. Hmm, I guess it runs in the family? Anyways, I love it and will definitely be using it to display my goods at my show next month.
I really do love getting fun things in the mail (come on, who doesn't?), which is why I always try to send fun things in the mail, I know it'll come back to me somehow. Try it, because you never know what'll turn up in your mailbox one day.
ps: new banner is up!

22 September 2008
hello, fall. i do love you.

Today is the day I've been waiting for. That's right, I love fall. I've always been a fall girl. The coolness, the sweaters, the boots, the hats, the colors, the baking, the applesauce, that amazing light, and, um, my birthday...but that comes later. Yes, we have officially entered my favorite season, and I couldn't be happier. I rung in the season this weekend with a beautiful wedding of close friends, and a last-minute visit from and old friend and his wife traveling around the US from Brazil (see more about their documentary that they're screening here). It was utterly lovely and my head is still spinning. That might have something to do with all of the Spanish, Portuguese and translation to English that has gone on these past few days, but I like to think it's because it was just such a beautiful few days.
In any case, I believe it's time for my fall manifesto. I didn't do the best of jobs at my summer manifesto, but I'm not too hung up about it. This summer didn't exactly pan out as I had planned, which makes me even more excited about the next few months. So here goes, some things I'm hoping to fill my days with over the next few months...
:: knit something, anything. it's been way too long.
:: finish a book. needless to say, i didn't get through any three books this summer, so i'm lowering my standards a bit.
:: go on at least one day or weekend trip with my honey (and no, my grandpa's 85th birthday party doesn't count).
:: take more walks, especially photo walks.
:: get busy with a couple of new crafty projects i've got brewing...
:: continue my two week streak of weekly meal planning (i know, i'm already on a roll!).
:: hunt down and try out the few photobooths in this town.
:: spend more time with friends, just hanging out.
Alright friends, I think this should do it. Also, Hannah is having an impromptu polaroid week, so you can find me there. Happy fall my friends.
ps: i know with all this fall talk, that banner needs a little refreshing. this week, i promise.

something old, something new.
Isn't that what they always say for weddings? I think so. Well, I certainly had a little bit of both these past few days. This weekend was a.maz.ing. I'm not even really sure how to begin to recap it, except to say that it was exactly what I needed. Every moment of it. I'm going to start at the very end of the weekend and work backwards for you. The part that directly proceeded my carry-on bag being chock full of polaroid film.
I know that I've talked before about how much I've come to love blogging and flickring primarily because of the awesome people I've met through the internet. Well, this weekend, I had my very first flickr meetup. In Portland, Oregon. After spending four solid days with some of my closest friends, it was incredible to meet perfect strangers (well, sort of) and feel just as comfortable around them as I had around my college friends (some of whom I had even lived with at various points).
We chatted, whipped out our cameras, gushed over polaroids, drank coffee (and chai), rolled our eyes at the dude next to us who totally wanted to join our little party, and just got to know each other. At least for the hour we had before I needed to race off to the airport. It was a perfect way to end a perfect weekend. Thanks ladies!27 August 2008
these boots...

...were made for dancing. And we're off for a few days! I think I always secretly wanted some cowgirl boots, and now (thank you M + M) I had a reason to get some. The rehearsal dinner for the wedding this weekend is a cowboy theme. So obviously, I had to go find myself a pair of boots. I had meant to go last Wednesday, but was feeling super tired after work so I left that errand for Thursday. When I walked into the store (an awesome vintage clothing store that I occasionally pop into), I tried on a couple pairs. One was too big, one was too small. And I was beginning to feel very Goldilocks-ish. The dude behind the counter asked my size and then said they had just gotten in a pair that size a few hours ago. He hadn't even really checked them out or priced them yet. Yes, you guessed it, they were perfect. And they have daisies stitched on them too! What more could I ask for in my very first pair (at least as an adult) of cowgirl boots? Not a whole lot.
I am so looking forward to this weekend. To hanging out with my man. Going to airport and actually getting on a plane this time (I've probably taken at least twelve airport trips this year, and only actually gotten on a plane twice). Seeing some of my closest and most fun friends who I haven't seen in a few years. Watching my friend get married. Meeting some new friends. And just taking a break. I hope you all get to take a little bit of a break this weekend, whether you're going anywhere or not.

mayumi me
I'm not sure how many of you out there have heard of minnie and james, the new brainchild of Tiffany Jewell, and the beautiful clothing that she is sewing up while she's not busy being a montessori school teacher. I can't remember how I first discovered Tiffany, but I'm so glad I did. And when she started selling clothing from her own patterns earlier this year, I knew I had to get my hands on one of her pieces.
I've written here before about my ongoing dilemma about buying clothing. Fighting sweatshops (and worker exploitation in all forms) has always been an issue close to my heart and I really do my best to avoid buying clothing made in factories that I know nothing about (which is most factories). Luckily, there are more and more small clothing companies out there that are being responsible, both ethically and environmentally, and transparent about their manufacturing practices. I also buy a lot of clothing second-hand, places like this make that easy.
I've (obviously) begun one of my solutions to this dilemma this past year by making a lot of my own clothing. However, I am only one woman. And even if I did have all the time in the world to sew my own wardrobe, I really like the idea of supporting other talents out there and including some other beautiful pieces of clothing in my closet. Needless to say, I've been delighted by all the small, independent designers that are popping up all over the internet. Maybe at some point soon, I'll post a list of a few of my favorites...But anyways, I did finally order the Mayumi Mini Dress from Tiffany earlier this summer. Sadly, when it arrived in the mail, the fit was not perfect. Since Tiffany makes each of her pieces to order, and is pretty much just one of the most awesome people out there, she was more than happy to remake the dress for me. Seriously, she made me another dress! And I love it. It's extremely well made and all the details are accounted for. It's comfortable and stylish and I'm sure the second I wear it out of the house, I'll be getting compliments left and right. This dress is super light for summer, but would also look great with tights and boots (okay, so it was too hot for boots when I was taking these photos, but I really love how it looks. Maybe I could moonlight as a go-go dancer?). Have I mentioned that I'm ready for fall? Right then.
If any of you are in the market for some new clothing this fall, I highly recommend checking out her shop. Happy Thursday, friends!
